A Look Inside the Worldview of The United Kingdom
Worldview is an incredibly important part of culture, so it only makes sense for this Blog to include a post that pertains to worldview. Before we dive right in, let's do a quick refresher on what the worldview actually is. Worldview is a “frame of reference that develops from experiences and enables people to interpret themselves, others, and the world around them” according to the Communication Between Cultures Textbook (pg. 44). In a simpler example, each and every culture is essentially rooted in a set of beliefs. These rooted beliefs are a culture's worldview. A worldview helps us, as human beings, answer some of life's most important questions. This makes worldview incredibly important. So what is the worldview throughout the United Kingdom? Let's find out!
In my opinion, we could not talk about the United Kingdom's worldview, without discussing the Royal family. The British Monarch is idolized around the world, so it is no surprise that the Royal family is the epicenter of the worldview for many individuals throughout the United Kingdom. This does not mean that all citizens support the actions of the royal family, but nevertheless they are still an incredibly important drive in British culture. A large component of the United Kingdom's worldview is their prominent religion of Christianity. With that being said, Cultural Atlas reported in an article that there are an increasing number of British individuals claiming that they do not believe in God. These statistics have the potential to result in Christianity being overthrown as the United Kingdom’s national religion.
While talking about worldview, I think that it is very important to mention the emphasis on stoicism throughout British culture. The British are notoriously stoic. This is a practice that was instilled in British culture that was instilled during their loss of World War I. This was an incredibly trying time for the United Kingdom, but they remained stoic. This is a practice that is alive and well to this day. In fact the Royal Family is notoriously stoic. A recent example of this stoic light would be the Royal Families lack of emotion during the funeral of the beloved Queen Elizabeth II. The family's lack of emotion was not because they were sad, it was because being stoic is the British way.
Total People published this article stating that England's Core assumptions are based on four fundamental values. These four fundamental values are democracy, rule of law, respect and tolerance, and individual liberty.
When talking about British cultural expressions the first thing that comes to mind would be manners. Citizens of the United Kingdom are notorious for being an incredibly well mannered culture. The United Kingdom bases a large amount of citizens' worth on the way in which they present themselves. This makes manners an incredibly large component to the United Kingdom's worldview according to Montclaims article on British etiquette. High Tea is a well mannered practice that is a daily activity for nearly all Brits.
The biggest thing that comes to mind when thinking about worldview, would be ethics. I say this because what individuals view as right or wrong plays an incredibly large role in how they interpret themselves, others, and the world around them In terms of ethics The United Kingdom's national news source, BBC, reported that the majority of the UK believes in tolerance. The article also stated that 69%of those surveyed said people should be free to live their lives as they want, as long as that doesn’t harm others.
Without hesitation the United Kingdom used to have a very homogenous worldview. This means that the worldview was shared by a large majority of the members within its culture. Although as the United Kingdom has grown it has also diversified. According to Britannica there are now prominent components of “Afro-Caribbean, Asian, Muslim, and other immigrant groups” included within society. An example of this would be how there once was an over abundance of fish and chips throughout England, and while that famous meal is still very prominent throughout the culture, there are now many other cosine options such as Chinese, Indian and even Italian food.
All and all this proves that our worldview is constantly changing, while simultaneously remaining rooted in the same strong beliefs. How has this post made you feel about your own worldview?
